Our ethnicities help us define who we are individually and as broader communities. They define our cultural traditions, our heritage, our ancestry. Our ethnicities show us the many commonalities we share despite what we look like. Without ethnicity, we are left to define each other by skin color and we all know that has done more harm than good — not just in America, but around the world. In a perfect world, it would be great if we all saw each other as humans. But humans are flawed beings and in that regard, we must take a step-by-step approach in achieving equality. The reason Black folks are referred to as Black or African Americans in the Americas is that they had their cultural traditions and their ancestries robbed from them. Whiteness is merely a counter-narrative to Blackness. It’s based on the premise of superiority and nothing more. Make sense?
